“Emerging Eastern Light”
Artist Reception with Hartman Deetz of the Mashpee Wopanaak Nation
Saturday, May 21st 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
Hartman Deetz is a member of the Mashpee Wopanaak Nation in Massachusetts. Deetz’s cultural identity has always been a guide for him. He has been traveling between his home in the San Francisco East Bay and his traditional territory in Massachusetts most of his life.
Deetz has no formal art training but has benefited from a sense of artistic discipline that has opened the way for him to learn much from his peers and contemporaries. Deetz’s early artistic interest in graffiti art was referred to by one of his elders as “counting coup on the white man”. Of course, this elder wisdom encouraged him to continue to fine tune his talents.
In the year 2000, Deetz was shot in the act of painting graffiti. This experience inspired him to become a catalyst for transformative change. He relocated to Massachusetts and immersed himself in Wopanaak culture and community where he learned many of the traditional art forms of his people. During this time Deetz was able to temper some of the destructive angst of his youth and focus his discontent on environmental activism with the Indigenous led Idle No More movement which swept across North America and the world in late 2012. Deetz is an active member of Idle No More SF Bay.
His current works often have themes of environmentalism and caring for the next generation. These works are especially relevant to his adult life as a father of 3. In spite of making a conscious effort to be more environmentally sustainable in his art production Deetz still seeks to honor the art form of graffiti that helped shape both his life and artistic expression through his developing years.
Gathering Tribes is excited to share these new works by a powerfully creative man.
