Please join us in welcoming our Huichol brother, Luciano Valdez, back to Gathering Tribes. Twice each year, Luciano makes the long trek from his remote village in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Jalisco, Mexico to share the beautiful and meaningful arts and crafts from his community. It takes him about a week of travel to arrive at Gathering Tribes.
The Huichol people create their art using yarn, beads, tree resin, beeswax and wood. A thin layer of tree resin and beeswax is placed on the wood, then the yarn or beads are carefully and meticulously embedded into the mixture. The designs all have spiritual meaning within the Huichol culture and are usually about healing, protection and/or gratitude.
The Huichol people also make intricate beadwork jewelry. Luciano brings three-dimensional beaded flower necklaces, baskets full of colorful bracelets in a variety of sizes, earrings, rings and key chains.
Luciano and his community receive 100% of the proceeds of this show, enabling him to sell at close to wholesale prices while he is here. This is our way of supporting this traditional indigenous community which lives without running water, electricity and paved roads. We understand that Luciano's community prays for the entire world and this is our way of showing our appreciation. More photos below:
