Navajo silversmith, Anthony Bowman, handmade this tufa cast bracelet with a beautiful natural, domestic turquoise stone. Tufa casting is the oldest form of Native American fabricated jewelry. Exceptionally fine tufa, which is a volcanic stone, is cut in half. The design is then etched into the tufa, leaving lines to vent the heat and a pour hole in the top. The two halves are tightly bound together and the molten silver or gold is poured into the hole. If there are any microscopic cracks the entire mold breaks and the jewelry has to begin all over again. The tufa leaves an organic stippled pattern on the jewelry.
