Maria lives in Oakland, was born in Bucaramanga, Colombia and raised in central Illinois.  She is an activist, a member of Idle No More SF Bay, an Amazon Watch volunteer and a signatory on the Indigenous Women of the Americas Defending Mother Earth Treaty.  Maria is a water protector and land defender who spent several weeks in North Dakota  during the struggle at Standing Rock.

Maria has been invited to the Sapara Nation in the Ecuadorean Amazon by Gloria Ushigua Santi.  Gloria is a fierce advocate   for her people and the living jungle they protect. She is also the leader of Ashinwaka, the Sapara Women's Association, as well as an original signatory on the Indigenous Women of the Americas Defending Mother Earth Treaty which was signed for the first time in 2The Sapara Nation is located in the most biodiverse place in the world, Yasuni, a World Heritage Park. 

in the Amazon Rainforest of Ecuador.  Maria will be traveling to Sapara Territory in February to live with Gloria and her people for six months.  She will travel by commercial plane to Ecuador, a bush plane into the Amazon, and a small boat to Gloria’s village.  She will be assisting Gloria in the work she is doing and learning from her community.

There will be an live auction of Maria’s paintings and other surprise items at Gathering Tribes during this event!  We will also hear from her about her life as an activist and her upcoming plans.
