Huichol Art: Beauty, Power & Protection

Saturday May 4, 2019 11:00 AM - Sunday May 5, 2019 6:00 PM

Saturday, May 4th - 11am to 6pm

Sunday, May 6th - 11am to 5pm

A wonderful opportunity to meet our Huichol brother, Luciano Valdez, support his traditional indigenous community and buy fabulous hand-made gifts full of meaning at nearly wholesale prices!

Huichol art is colorful, meaningful and beautiful.  It is made by putting a thin layer of tree resin and beeswax over wood or gourds and then pressing seed beads or yarn in to the mixture.  The 2-dimensional "paintings" depict glimpses into the world of this traditional indigenous tribe.  One might see symbols of animals, curanderos (healers), rain and more esoteric symbols of energy and glimpses into the spiritual dimensions.  The images symbolize healing, protection and/or gratitude. The Huichol artisans also make 3-dimensional hand-carved wooden animals that they press the mixture on to and then press in seed beads.  Each carefully crafted work of art is a window into a culture that has existed long before Columbus got lost!

Luciano has been showing his work, and the work of other village members, at Gathering Tribes for over 18 years.  Each year we reserve the first weekends of May and December for him.  The village in which he lives is very remote, with no roads, electricity and one pipe from a spring for running water.  To make the journey to Gathering Tribes, he walks 4 to 5 days out of the steep and arrid Sierra Madre mountains in Jalisco, Mexico to the road.  Then, he is on a bus for almost a week to arrive in the Bay Area.

In order to support this traditional community, Luciano receives 100% of the proceeds during this show.  It is the least we can do to show our gratitude for the ongoing prayers for the world that his community makes.  Please join us in welcoming back our Huichol brother!
