Zuni Pueblo Pottery & Jewelry Event

Saturday June 23, 2018 - Sunday June 24, 2018

Meet Roxanne Seoutewa & Carl Laate!

Saturday, June 23rd - 10am to 6pm. & Sunday, June 24th - 11am to 5pm

We were excited to hear from Roxanne Seoutewa and her desire to visit us for a weekend event at Gathering Tribes.  She and her husband, Carl Laate, will be showing their traditional Zuni jewelry and pottery during this weekend event. What a treat!  And, as always at Gathering Tribes, artists receive 100% of their sales during our artist events.

Roxanne Seoutewa and her husband, Carl Laate, were borth born and raised in Zuni Pueblo.  Zuni is one of the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico.  It is ocated in a beautiful village with sacred mountains, scenic beauty and has a rich traditional culture.  Roxanne learned how to make the traditional Zuni petit-point jewelry by observing and listening to her late mother, Amy Seoutewa.  Each piece of sterling silver sheet and wire is hand cut, and each strip of bezel is sawed by hand and soldered onto the silver sheet.  Natural stones are sliced, cut and individually made into the tiny pieces which the term “petit point” comes from.  Lamp oil is then used to heat the water and place the individual cut stones on the wooden sticks.  The natural stones are shaped on lapidary equipement, sanded, polished and set into each tiny bezel.  The finished piece is then polished and washed in warm, soapy water, giving each piece more shine.  These individual pieces of art are then stamped with Roxanne’s hallmark.

Carlos Laate was also born in Zuni, New Mexico.  He learned pottery making from his step-grandmother, Daisy Hooee by observing and listening to her and what she said about making pottery.  It was the same way with his aunt, Jennie Laate.  Carlos has been pottery since 1989 and his technique continues to improve.  His design elements cover all the traditional motifs: deer, house, rosettes, rainbirds, lines, curves and geometric symbos.
