Hopi Pretty Girl Katsina Doll by Spencer Nutima

Hopi Pretty Girl Katsina Doll by Spencer Nutima

Katsina Dolls are colorful carvings made by the Hopi and are traditionally used as teaching tools. They represent a variety of Katsinam, immortal beings that control aspects of the natural world and society. Various Katsinam will appear physically in the Hopi villages each year as messengers between the human and spirit worlds. These dolls are carved out of cottonwood root and are painted and embellished to represent a specific spirit messenger.

This Pretty Girl Katsina was carved by accomplished Hopi carver, Spencer Nutima, from the Orayvi Village on the Hopi Mesa.
