Michael Horse Ledger Painting "Defender of the People"

Michael Horse Ledger Painting "Defender of the People"

Ledger paintings are a type of Native American folk art which started in the mid 1800's and was traditionally an art form of the Plains Indians. The images document what was going on in "Indian Country" from a Native perspective. It is a type of "internment art", which came about when the US government forcibly moved Indian people onto reservations and Native people used scrap paper to document what was going on around them.

This wonderful ledger painting titled "Defender of the People" is by the well known artist and jeweler, Michael Horse, whose work can be found in the Southwest Museum in Los Angeles, the Eiteljorg Museum in Indianapolis, the Smithsonian, and many other galleries and collections around the world. The original document on which the artist has painted with vintage watercolors is a commodities ledger from a settlement in Montana. It is archivally matted and framed.
