Tufa Cast Dragonfly Pendant with Waterweb Kingman Turquoise by Michael Horse

Tufa Cast Dragonfly Pendant with Waterweb Kingman Turquoise by Michael Horse

This tufa cast sterling silver dragonfly pendant was handmade by well known artist and jeweler Michael Horse. Tufa casting is the oldest form of Native American jewelry fabrication.  Fine tufa, which is a volcanic stone, is cut in half. The design is then etched into the tufa, leaving lines for venting heat and a pour hole in the top. The two halves are tightly bound together and molten silver or gold is poured into the hole. If there are any microscopic cracks the entire mold breaks and the jewelry process has to begin all over again. The tufa leaves an organic stippled pattern on the jewelry.

At the heart of this dragonfly is a bezel set natural Waterweb Kingman Turquoise stone. This stunning piece hangs on a strand of Sleeping Beauty turquoise beads.
