Hummingbirds are fierce defenders of their families. Many Indigenous people consider them to be messengers between this world and the spirit world. And, in some tribes they are considered to be “love medicine”.
Traditionally, Zuni carvings are symbolically fed cornmeal. Each Zuni fetish comes in a box with a descriptive card and a tiny bit of corn meal to tide them over until they reach you.

Regular price $40.00 Save $-40.00Justin Red Elk carved this Happy Otter from Zuni fish rock (serpentine). It is very happy because it has a pink mussel shell fish in its mouth. Its a bit difficult to see in the photos, but if you look carefully you can see the whiskers and paws are detailed.

Otters are water creatures that live in oceans, rivers, creeks and lakes. The mothers float around with their babies on their bellies when they are young. They put their food on their bellies making their bellies dining tables. They are associated with happiness, joy, and community.

Wide-eyed Owl & Pouch

Regular price $46.00 Save $-46.00This wide-eyed owl was carved by Justin Red Elk from Zuni Pueblo. The jet eyes are inlayed into pale green serpentine. Its beak, feet, tail, and wings are detailed. It arrived in a black leather pouch with a bit of cornmeal in it to feed it on its travels.

Owls are birds of the night who fly silently with excellent vision. Some of us are lucky enough to hear the swish of their wings as they fly by, or their gentle hoots. They, as do most raptors, communicate between this world and the next.
